Commander 6511th Test Group - Parachute

I was commander of the 6511th Test Group (parachute) at El Centro and Jim Wood was head of flight test at Edwards. We both worked for Major General Robert M. White. Jim was a great guy and I believe an outstanding officer and test pilot. I was surprised he wasn't selected for general. Buzz Aldrin was also at those meetings. He returned to the AF after his moon walk and was assigned as commandant of the TPS.

In early ‘73 MG Lane (later Lt. Gen.) replaced Bob White as CG of Edwards and my boss. White was a true gentleman and a great test pilot (X-15). He was also a great fighter pilot (AF Cross, 4 silver stars, etc). I thoroughly enjoyed working for him.

Flip into an Inverted Spin

I gave myself a thrill in this aerobatic biplane at El Centro. On one maneuver when I flipped into an inverted spin, but it recovered nicely when I followed the instructions my friend had given me before takeoff. I am glad he had covered spins since the recovery procedure was somewhat different from normal. Mainly, you went to full power when applying the control positions.

The airplane was built by a friend who was a crop duster by profession and an acrobatic pilot as a hobby.
